Anti-Tobacco Campaign

Since 2005, A.C.T.I.O.N. has conducted asthma awareness anti-tobacco campaigns with support from groups including the American Lung Association (ALA) of New York, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Tobacco Policy Change: A Collaborative for Healthier Communities and States, NYC Coalition for a Smoke-Free City, Public Health Solutions and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  THE POINT is proud to announce on October 14th, 2009, the NYC Council passed Intro 433-A, prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products in NYC, including cigars, little cigars and smokeless tobacco.  A.C.T.I.O.N. in partnership with the American Lung Association originally introduced this bill in 2006.  Go A.C.T.I.O.N.!

Urban Food Justice

In this campaign, ACTION fights for the promotion of food sovereignty. Food sovereignty is the ability to have access to the best quality produce you can.  Hunts Point houses the largest food distribution market in the nation, but we have yet to gain access to it. Because of this, Hunts Point is surrounded by unhealthy choices such as fast food. What we do to promote food sovereignty is plant fruits and vegetables and inform the community on how to make better, healthy food choices.

Greenway

The South Bronx Greenway is a green street that connects to parks and other waterfronts. The greenway was released in November 2006. The South Bronx Greenway is one of the primary goals of the Hunts Point Vision Plan that was in March 2005.  It is 1.5 miles of waterfront greenway, 8.5 miles of inland green streets, and nearly 12 acres of new waterfront open space throughout Hunts Point and Port Morris.

Transit

In this campaign, we inform the community about the MTA updates, using alternate transportation, and fight for a Rider Representative on the MTA Board Of Representatives to make day-to-day travels easier for the everyday rider. Alternative transportation includes biking, skateboarding, walking, etc. Alternate transportation also helps to promote healthy living and behaviors.

Redefining Rehabilitation

Redefining Rehabilitation’s purpose is to inform ourselves of the legal injustices that the people of the community all don’t know about. Once we, as activists, fully inform ourselves about how to respond to police, we are then able to inform others about their rights as people. We learned that once incarcerated, the basic rights of a human can be stripped. Most people don’t know that, so through this campaign, it’s our goal to provide others with as much information.

The Sheridan Expressway

The purpose of this campaign is to inform the community of the use of the Sheridan Expressway. It is a highway that is mostly used by trucks which causes pollution and adds to the asthma rates in the community. The trucks also make it dangerous for pedestrians to cross the streets. We want to provide an alternative way for trucks to enter the major food distribution in Hunts Point to make it safer for residents.
